Some 55% of the 840 men working for the first Australian company to win a major contract at the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric and Irrigation Scheme are migrants from Britain and Europe. The Australian company Thiess Brothers has a 10 million Pound Sterling contract to build an earth and rock fill dam 220 feet high on the Tooma River and a 9 mile tunnel through the mountains to divert the rivers water into Tumut Pond Dam.
