Civil engineering, 'Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme'. Some 55% of the 840 men working for the first Australian company to win a major contract at the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric and Irrigation Scheme are migrants from Britain and Europe. The Australian company Thiess Brothers has a 10 million Pound Sterling contract to build an earth and rock fill dam 220 feet high on the Tooma River and a 9 mile tunnel through the mountains to divert the rivers water into Tumut Pond Dam. Tunnel workers representing a dozen different nations, but working for Australia, pose before going on shift in the Tooma-Tumut tunnel. At right is Italian born Romolo Fubelli, 27, who is a job representative of the Australian Workers Union. He is a pump attendant in the tunnel
