Vaino Sampie from Finland first heard of Australia and what life was like there from an uncle just before the war. And for nine years he thought about coming to Australia. To achieve his ambition, he had to take a ship to America to get out of Finland and then he waited 15 months to get another job on a ship coming to Australia and his wife and two children could not get there until 1953. Vaino has spent most of his time since arriving in Australia at Mt Isa where he has worked as an underground miner and a building contractor. At present he is working as a timberman underground but he is planning to go to Brisbane where he hopes to build up a successful business building flats
