Overseas talent was the main ingredient in the fine fare offered at Australia's third festival of Arts. The names of top-class artists from Europe and America and gifted newcomers now settled in Australia were prominent among credits for the 165 performances of music, ballet, opera, drama, song and dance which drew 400 000 people to the two weeks' cultural feast. Guest of honour at the Festival was the eminent British composer-conductor, Sir William Walton. He conducted performances of his own works. Here he makes a point in the musical score of his concerto for Violincello during a break in rehearsal
