Mining manganese at Groote Eylandt. Groote Eyelandt saw very little development until 1963 when geologists discovered manganese, an essential mineral in the production of high quality steel. Since then Groote Eylandt has become one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Australia. Don Crockett, 39, a fitter and turner, intends to settle on Groote Eyelandt. He has been in Australia since October in 1963 and in that time he has flown back to England for a holiday but says he could not live there again. His hobbies on the island are fishing and skin-diving and he plans to get a speed boat. "I'm not here for the money. I earned as much as at home, but it's the way of life out here that counts" he said. Don's mother lives in Middlesex
