Some quarter of a million European migrants have spent their first days in Australia at Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre, Victoria. Bonegilla, about 200 miles north-east of Melbourne, near the Victoria-NSW border, is the largest of five reception centres and 30 hostels which Australia provides as temporary accommodation for migrants who are unable to go direct into private accommodation. At the Centre, newcomers attend daily English classes while arrangements are made for their employment. Later many move to a hostel where they may live for a maximum period of two years until they found their own accommodation. - Bonegilla is a self-contained township, with its own post office, hospital, bank, churches, schools, canteens.
