Some quarter of a million migrants have spent their first days in Australia at Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre. About 200 miles north-east of Melbourne, near the Vic-NSW border, is the largest of five reception centres and 30 hostels which Australia provides as temporary accommodation for migrants who are unable to go direct into private accommodation. At the Centre, newcomers attend daily English classes while arrangements are made for their employment. Interpreter Gyorgy Nagy helps a newcomer to register for employment
