The Department of Immigration Centre at Benalla, 121 miles north-east of Melbourne, accommodates up to 800 migrants. Its facilities include a youth centre, a cinema hall and a sports ground, which is popular with district soccer, hockey and cricket teams. Sealed roads, lawns, gardens and trees enhance the Centre, a World War II Royal Australian Air Force training facility. Director of the Centre since 1963 is Perth, WA born Mr H A Home, former Director of the Migrant Accommodation Centre at Wacol, Queensland.
