Many thousands of European migrants have received their introduction to the English language while traveling by ship to Australia. Lessons are conducted six days a week by shipboard education officers appointed by the Department of Immigration. They are assisted by volunteer teachers drawn from English speaking passengers on board. Migrants receive about one hours tuition each day and are given "homework' to do in their spare time. At the end of the voyage, students receive a certificate showing number of lessons they have attended. Here Josef Brajkovic, from Yugoslavia, receives his certificate from shipboard education officer, Derek Swan
