Australia gave a "magnificent and unparalleled" opportunity for shedding the past at the shoreline, the Commonwealth Minister for Immigration, Mr Opperman, said on October 30. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 12th annual conference of the Good Neighbour Council of Victoria. He appealed to settlers not to "import dissensions". The Victorian Minister for Immigration, Mr Vernon Wilcox, MP, who opened the conference, urged delegates to encourage newcomers to learn English and become naturalised.
