A modern home and a job awaited descendants of convicted farmer James Ruse when they arrived in Sydney by mv ORIANA on the 6th of May, 1961. Australia gave Mr and Mrs Edward Adams and family, a very different welcome from that of their great-great-uncle James Ruse on his arrival in 1788. James Ruse, a Cornishman, whose death sentence for stealing was later commuted to seven years transportation, claimed to be the first British settler to set foot on Australian soil, carrying Governor Phillip ashore on his back. Mr and Mrs Adams paid a visit to the cemetery, where James Ruse and his wife Elizabeth are buried. They were accompanied by the Mayor of Campbelltown, Mr G H Percival
