Very few British migrants to Australia can claim to be parents of teenage idol, but Mr and Mrs William Thorpe of Moorooka, Brisbane, can. Their 21 year old son, Billy, is one of the top pop singers in Australia with his own television show, his recordings regularly among the hits, and standing room only in his concerts. Mr and Mrs Thorpe and Billy migrated to Australia in 1955 from Sidcup, Kent. They were born in the East London suburb of West Ham, lived in Manchester where Billy was born. During and after the war, they spend 5 years in Kent. Mr Thorpe had worked for 30 years in a soap factory in England and got a similar job in Melbourne, but later moved to Brisbane to open a grocery shop. Mr and Mrs Thorpe in their grocery shop.
