Hundreds of new settlers last month (July) said farewell to the man who gave them their new start in life in Australia. They were farewelling Mr Patrick Farnan, who, at 65, stepped down from his position as Secretary of the Victorian Railways, as chairman of the Railways Staff Board in 1949 and 1952, Mr Farnan led the Railway biggest staff recruitment drive in Britain and Europe. He hand-picked almost 1000 British married railway workers and 800 German single men. "They are fine group of employees," he said. "Some have become Station Masters and several will sit soon for their engine drivers tickets." Mr Farnan said the migrant recruiting campaign had been an outstanding success and the majority still work for the railways. "These men are doing a great job for Victoria's Railways," he said
