Former Italian bricklayer Alf Balsamo, 44, now of Cairns, north Queensland, Australia, was in debt for his passage when he migrated to Australia nine years ago. He first worked as a sugar cane cutter to pay off his debt, then started work as a bricklayer. Today he is senior partner in a building firm which has 30,000 Australian pounds worth of work in hand. Alf Balsamo brought his brother Giovanni, 35 and Salvatore, 23, to Australia, taught them the building trade, and has taken them into partnership.
