Many post-war migrant are among 30 000 people who live in the NSW Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, regarded as the richest 600 square miles of country in Australia. The area has more than 2 000 farms producing annually 10 000 000 Pounds worth of fat lambs, rice, beef, wheat, fruit and vegetables. Water for the farms comes along a 100-mile canal from the Murrumbidgee River and flows through more than 2 000 miles of channels to the fields.
