Tremendous post-war development is fast turning Victoria's Latrobe Valley into the most important power and fuel centre in the Southern Hemisphere. Huge brown coal open-cuts, power stations, briquette works and gasification plants have made the industrial nerve centre of Victoria. Brown coal - and modern methods of utilizing it - form the basis of the Valley's almost unlimited future. Reserves of proven coal exceed 22 000 000 000 tons and exploratory borings indicate that there are further extensive deposits. Latvian Bronislavs Zubulis, 36, has been in Australia ten years. Now an Australian Citizen, he is standing in front of one of the huge turbines in Yallourn Power Station. 28 January 1959
