Tremendous post-war development is fast turning Victoria's Latrobe Valley into the most important power and fuel centre in the Southern Hemisphere. Huge brown coal open-cuts, power stations, briquette works and gasification plants have made the industrial nerve centre of Victoria. Brown coal - and modern methods of utilizing it - form the basis of the Valley's almost unlimited future. Reserves of proven coal exceed 22 000 000 000 tons and exploratory borings indicate that there are further extensive deposits. Yugoslav-born Djuro Elinger, who is a fitter's assistant at Yallourn Power Station, works on the annual overhaul of one of the turbo-generators. 28 January 1959
