Tremendous post-war development is fast turning Victoria's Latrobe Valley into the most important power and fuel centre in the southern Hemisphere. Huge brown coal open-cuts, power stations, briquette works and gasification plants have made the valley the industrial nerve centre of Victoria. Many of the valley's present population and some of Australia's foremost planners, visualise that within forty years the Latrobe Valley will have big, bustling skyscraper cities and a population counted in millions. Reserves of proven coal exceed 22,000,000,000 tons and exploratory borings indicate that there are further extensive deposits. The Victorian Gas and Fuel Corporation's brown-coal gasification plant was completed at Morwell two years ago. Costing 8,000,000 Australian pounds
