Tremendous post-war development is fast turning Victoria's Latrobe Valley into the most important power and fuel centre in the southern Hemisphere. Huge brown coal open-cuts, power stations, briquette works and gasification plants have made the valley the industrial nerve centre of Victoria. Many of the valley's present population and some of Australia's foremost planners, visualise that within forty years the Latrobe Valley will have big, bustling skyscraper cities and a population counted in millions. Reserves of proven coal exceed 22,000,000,000 tons. Hungarian-born and now a naturalized Australian, Bill Dickson is a generator-plant operator at the 8,000,000 Australian pounds Gasification plant at Morwell. Here he is at work in the control room
