Throughout the state of Queensland, post-war settlers can be found among the workers who are developing natural resources and expanding the State's commerce. Queensland's population of nearly 1 500 000 includes some 100 000 settlers from the United Kingdom an a score of European countries. Many thousands of migrants started their new lives as cane cutters, as farm hands or sugar mill labourers. Others with trade qualifications have found jobs in mines, factories and workshops around the state. Many more are serving the community in public utilities or as teachers in schools and colleges.
