Formerly a farmer with his father in Kent, Peter Ashenden, 35, is now a successful rice and sheep farmer at Murrami, near Griffith, NSW, Australia. He is growing 100 acres of rice, which should produce between 200 an 300 tons of grain worth some 40 Pounds a ton to him in 1959. Ashenden, and his wife Margaret, came to Australia in 1947 and worked on a sheep station then on a rice farm for two years before investing his modest capital on his own farm. Ashenden today values his 740-acre property at about 35 000 Pounds. Peter examines young rice growing on his property. The rice grows in flooded bays. All work on the crop is done mechanically.
