Having begun only 35 years ago, the Australian rice industry is now acknowledged as the most efficient in the world. Some growers in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of NSW produce more than four tons of rice to the acre - the highest production in the world. The 1958 harvest amounted to 100 000 tons in the M I A and irrigation areas on the Murray River, of which the Murrumbidgee is a tributary. New settlers from the United Kingdom and Europe, particularly Italy, are strongly represented among rice farmers, farm workers and employees of rice mills, bulk handling plants and associated industries. Typical irrigation channel in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Similar channels carry water into rice bays. January 1959
