Some 55 per cent of the 840 men working for the first Australian company to win a major contract in the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric and Irrigation Scheme are migrants from Britain and Europe. Their home countries include England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Holland, Norway, Greece and Austria. The Australian company, Theiss Brothers Pty Ltd, has a 10 Million Pound contract to build an earth and rock fill dam 220ft , high on the Tooma River and a 9-mile tunnel through the mountains to divert the river's water into Tumut Pond Dam, on the Tumut River.
