Former sculptor George Virine, 39, has just completed in Brisbane, Australia the largest bust ever made in Australia. The six feet high bust of pioneer aviator, Bert Hinkler, will stand on a 14 feet high quarter moon shaped base in Bundaberg, Hinkler's home town. Mr Virine teaches modelling, sculpture and art restoration at the Brisbane Central Technical College and conducts his studio on a part time basis. He has works in the Queensland Conservatorium of music, Brisbane, several hospitals and government buildings and in appreciation of his new country, has presented a bust of the late King George VI to the Australian Government. George Virine is not a former sculptor. He is 94 year of age and is presently holding sculpture classes once per week at his studio in Rochedale, Brisbane. After leaving Central Technical College in 1976, he established his Art Academy studio at Kangaroo Point. He judged many Westfield art competition is the sculpture section. He held private classes there until he moved to Rochedale in 1988, where he has lived since, his studio on site.In 1994 he completed another public monument of St Vladimir which currently stands in the grounds of the University of Queensland.
