German born Mr John Pillig, of the Canberra suburb of Yarralumla, has carved an 8ft 6in high statue of the crucified Christ for Saint Peter's Lutheran Memorial Church in the national capital. Rising behind the altar, the dramatic figure is the focal point of the church. Mr Pillig, who is 78 years old, worked on the figure for eight months under the shelter of a car port at his home. Mr Pillig came to Australia in 1955 to join a brother who had lived in Melbourne for more than 40 years as a professional sculptor and artist. After his brother died, Mr Pillig came to Canberra where he lives with his son and daughter in law
