The Minister for Immigration, Mr Hubert Opperman, had an intensive programme of official discussions and inspection of migration activities in Italy during seven day visit between April 24 to May 4, 1965. Mr Opperman, who was accompanied by Mrs Opperman and the Secretary of the department of Immigration, Mr P R Heydon, CBE, visited Italy first at the beginning of a tour that would take him briefly to most European countries from which Australia obtains migrants. While in Rome, Mr Opperman was received by his Holiness the Pope. During a half hour conference at the Vatican, His Holiness showed the welfare of Italian migrants in Australia.
