Once a year the Australian National and inter-club Surf Championships are held, this year in Coolangatta where the top live savers from each Australian State compete for Australian titles. In the 58 years since its inception more than 145, 000 lives have been saved by members of the Association. Today new strength is being added to the ranks of life savers with the influx of many migrants' members, a number of whom took part in the 1966 Australian National Surf Championship. Every muscle strains as this belt man in the rescue and resuscitation event takes to the water. He will swim out the life line behind him; events like this prepare the teams for real life emergencies.
