Immigration Week (October 6 to 12, 1957) more than 1500 new settlers became Australian Citizens in 22 Naturalization Ceremonies throughout Queensland. There were three ceremonies in the city of Brisbane, one for 50 people Corinda, one for 100 people at Wacol migrant centre and an Australian record ceremony for 1000 at the Brisbane City Hall. More than 2000 relatives and friends, who filled the great hall to capacity and overflowed into the foyers, accompanied the 1000 new citizens. The Lord Mayor (Alderman During Groom) wore his ermine robes and chain of office as he presided at the ceremony, one of the most moving and colourful events ever witnessed in Brisbane.
