Happy Jacks, Australia's highest settlement (4,950 Ft.) had its first wedding on May 31, 1958, when two German migrants, Gisela Stahl, 18, and Alfred ("Till") Andre, 27, were married in the township's corrugated iron hall. Most of the 400 people in the settlement were there to see them married. At midnight on his wedding eve, "Till" clears away broken glass and rubbish from his bride's front gate. In Germany it is traditional for friends to dump broken crockery at the bride's door. The groom must clean it up without assistance, otherwise his marriage will have bad luck
