Family Challenges: Loneliness. Isolation. Leaving one’s homeland, culture, loved ones, all that is familiar. For Mum the hardest time was in Greta camp, Dad away at work, she on her own with a little girl, everything strange and seemingly harsh. Mum had learned English before leaving Germany, but for Dad that was another hurdle. Money always, always so very tight. Anti-German feeling which was still prevalent at that time. Settling into new schools and understanding different attitudes. Mum often recalled the help and kindness of wonderful neighbours, and the support of others like the Principal of Segenhoe School. Friends with a similar background, made on the journey over, became life-long friends as they moved from one culture into another, and settled into a new country they grew to love passionately.
