Dad and a mate worked hard on the side, cutting timber, breaking coal, anything, to earn a few extra bob to get ahead. All the kids were involved, bagging coal, sorting timber, cleaning up. They also built garages together as another job, ‘Hard work but good money. We could do up our houses and pay them off.’ Dad’s skill and love was on the land and he obtained work on Alabama Stud. We soon settled into community life, Segenhoe School, Belltrees sports, family picnics. We fished and swam in the Hunter River, picnicked at Glenbawn Dam, and occasionally had an outing to the Aberdeen cinema or the motorbike races at Muswelbrook. Mum & Dad were naturalized as soon as they could and believed in working hard and giving back to the community that took you in.
